I built Tamil Name Gap Finder, a tool to find places on OpenStreetMap that are missing Tamil names.
Most streets, shops and landmarks in our towns are still labelled only in English on OpenStreetMap, so maps and apps can’t show them in Tamil. I built a small tool to make those gaps easy to find and fix.
How it works
- Pick a city (Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Tiruchirappalli, Salem, Tirunelveli or Puducherry), or draw your own area. (currently the cities are hardcoded)
- Filter by category: amenities, shops, roads, places, tourism, leisure, offices or buildings.
- Press “Scan this view” to see named features that don’t yet have a
name:tatag.
A Tamil name added to OSM lets people search in Tamil and helps those who read Tamil first.
It also becomes available to every app built on OSM data, such as OsmAnd and Organic Maps. Adding one takes about 30 seconds.
Please add only names you’re sure of, the ones people in your area actually use, not machine transliterations.
Try it: Tamil Name Gap Finder
I’d love your feedback, bug reports and ideas for other cities or features.
