Adopting Nix from Day 1 through nix shells for absolute beginners

விளக்கம் (5–6 வரிகள்): Nix is a vast ecosystem of projects now, so the scope of this workshop is to get everyone start using nix shell for their everyday workflow no matter if they are absolute beginners or veterans. If time permits the scope will extend to introduce devenv(a beginner friendly wrapper for Nix aimed for dev environments, more awesome and lightweight than dev containers). This session will be very practical and will be a perfect place for anyone to start understanding the Nix ecosystem. The workshop will also include the explanation of the fundamental paradigm difference in pure functional declarative vs declarative vs imperative approaches.

Expected Outcome of this workshop:
Also after this workshop participants will have a new way of thinking to approach modern problems and workflows. Attendees will understand:

  1. What’s Nix and it’s ecosystem of approaches
  2. How to use Nix shells, nixpkgs etc from day 1
  3. Why PF declarative is way much reliable and necessary compared to imperative automation.
  4. Why containers(dockers, podman etc) isn’t always the necessary solution for everything and when/where to choose the reproducibility and isolation accordingly?

Getting Started with OpenTelemetry: Instrumenting an E-commerce Application with SigNoz

விளக்கம் (5–6 வரிகள்):
OpenTelemetry has become the de facto standard for application observability, but getting started can often feel overwhelming. In this hands-on workshop, participants will instrument a sample e-commerce application with OpenTelemetry and visualize telemetry data using SigNoz. The session covers traces, metrics, and logs, showing how distributed tracing works across microservices. By the end of the workshop, attendees will have a fully observable application running on their own laptops and a practical understanding of modern observability.

Expected Outcome of this workshop:
After this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the fundamentals of OpenTelemetry and observability.
  • Deploy a sample e-commerce microservices application.
  • Instrument services using OpenTelemetry SDKs and auto-instrumentation.
  • Collect traces, metrics, and logs using the OpenTelemetry Collector.
  • Set up SigNoz as the observability backend.
  • Analyze distributed traces to identify latency bottlenecks and service dependencies.
  • Understand how OpenTelemetry fits into production cloud-native environments.

Target audience:
Developers, DevOps Engineers, SREs, Platform Engineers, and anyone interested in observability. Suitable for beginners with basic Docker knowledge.

  • Laptop with at least 16 GB RAM
  • Docker Desktop (or Docker Engine + Docker Compose) installed
  • Git installed
  • Basic familiarity with Docker and the command line

No. Linux, macOS, or Windows (with Docker Desktop/WSL2) are all supported.

Expected Maximum participant count:
30–50 participants for an interactive workshop. Larger audiences are also possible with projector support and a microphone for Q&A.

Demo / Hands-on உள்ளதா?:
Yes. This is a completely hands-on workshop where every participant will deploy the application, configure OpenTelemetry, install SigNoz, generate application traffic, and explore traces, metrics, and logs in real time.
