What is the use of /dev/null file and why always it is empty when used for trcking running process

May I know how process running is tracked with help of /dev/null . Even with root priviledge- /dev/null was ALWAYS EMPTY , but using this only shell-scripting is programmed to find process is running or not.
Please elaborate if came to know the usage of /dev/null

pgrep $process > /dev/null என்பதில் pgrep என்பதுதான் கமாண்ட். அதன் மேலுவலை இங்கே பார்க்கலாம். > /dev/null என்பது pgrep கமாண்டின் வெளியீட்டை /dev/null ற்கு ரீடைரக்ட் செய்யவும் என்று கட்டளை இட்டுள்ளனர். ஷெல் ரீடைரக்‌ஷன் பற்றிய விளக்கம் இங்கே பார்க்கலாம்
